Richmond Ballet, the State Ballet of Virginia, invites you to apply for our 2009 Summer Intensive Program.
- Develop and improve your ballet technique in a focused series of classes taught by professional dancers and dance educators.
- Experience one of the finest dance facilities on the East Coast, completed in 2000.
- Explore jazz, modern, character dance and other associated dance disciplines.
- Enrich your performance skills by learning about mime, music, acting and the theatrical aspects of dance.
- Work with Richmond Ballet Company and Artistic Staff as a Trainee in preparation for a professional dance career.
- Join other serious-minded ballet students in an intensive yet fun atmosphere of camaraderie and shared dance interests.
Summer Program: June 22–July 25, 2009
The summer intensive program at Richmond Ballet is designed for young
men and women who love dance and are committed to developing their
ballet technique. The variety of classes offered—in ballet as well as
associated dance techniques—encourages program participants to deepen
and expand their expertise. Faculty members are from the School of
Richmond Ballet and Richmond Ballet’s professional company. Guest
faculty also contribute in specialized areas of expertise. Previous
program participants have gone on to professional careers with Richmond
Ballet as well as other ballet companies throughout the country.
Summer Curriculum
Ballet: School of
Richmond Ballet offers five intensive course levels for serious ballet
students, ages 13 and up. The curriculum includes daily technique
classes, augmented by subjects designed to develop a well-rounded
dancer at each level of training. Courses are taught by internationally
known faculty at Richmond Ballet’s state-of-the-art Canal Street
studios in downtown Richmond.
Pointe: Pointe technique for all female students
Men’s Classes: Ballet technique for intermediate and advanced students
Variations: Instruction in selected variations from the classical and contemporary repertory for advanced female and male dancers
Pas de Deux: Partnering technique for advanced female and intermediate/advanced male students
Character Dance: Instruction in traditional national
dance forms such as mazurka, polonaise, czardas and waltz, which are
used extensively in classical ballets
Jazz: Contemporary trends from Los Angeles and New York merged with traditional jazz dance styles
Modern: Exploration of the movement capabilities of
the body through dance elements of space, rhythm and dynamics found in
established modern dance choreography
Enrichment Program: A variety of dance-related
subjects such as Dance History, Injury Prevention, Nutrition, and the
crossover of associated art forms such as Music for Dancers,
Choreography, Acting and Mime. Also video tapes of ballets from the
classical and contemporary repertory are shown regularly
Performance: All five-week intensive course students are eligible to participate in a workshop performance at the end of the session

We strongly recommend that each student participate in the full five-week program. Applications for a three-week session, June 22rd–July 11th, will be considered on a first-come-first-served basis after all five week student applications have been processed. Rates for the three-week session will be adjusted accordingly.
Housing Information
Summer Intensive 2008
School of Richmond Ballet offers two housing plans for out-of-town students attending our summer intensive course.
Housing option A
Available for ages 13 and Older
Fully Chaperoned accommodations at a local hotel and three meals a day included.
Housing option B
Students Age 18 and Older
Students are free to make their own housing arrangements, with local family and friends, subleasing or renting apartments, and providing for their own meals.

Program participants benefit from the extensive experience of an internationally known faculty from the School of Richmond Ballet combined with an exciting roster of guest teachers. With degrees and performance/choreography credits from around the world, plus in-depth experience in dance instruction, our faculty offers students the highest level of professionalism.
