Encore New York: Richmond Ballet
takes its best to
The Big Apple; Richmond audiences offered
an advanced
sneak peek.
RICHMOND - In preparation for its
return to New York's Joyce Theater the week of April 6-11, 2010, Richmond Ballet
is offering Richmond audiences the opportunity to see the same programs that
will be performed in Manhattan during an extended run March 23 - April 1 at the
Ballet's Studio Theatre at 407 East Canal Street in downtown Richmond. The six
works, which will be presented on two separate programs in both Richmond and New
York, represent a varied sampling of Richmond Ballet's repertory, including the
some of the most popular and critically-acclaimed ballets from past seasons.
"These two programs are a
sampling of some of the best work we have done here at Richmond Ballet. All of
the pieces were commissioned by Richmond Ballet and were created on our
dancers," says Artistic Director Stoner Winslett. "Audiences will have the
opportunity to see many of their favorites within the space of ten
days."
The six works, which were
created by choreographers from as far away as Buenos Aires, demonstrate the
versatility and range for which the Richmond Ballet dancers have come to be
known. Misa Criolla, commissioned in 2009 from New York choreographer
William Soleau, is a choreographic interpretation of the renowned choral work by
Ariel Ramirez and expresses the profession of our inner faith and the triumph of
the human spirit. Argentine choreographer Mauricio Wainrot's Voyages
(2008) blends world music and contemporary ballet. Violin (2006) by Val
Caniparoli represents neoclassicism at its best, while Jessica Lang's starkly
beautiful To Familiar Spaces in Dream (2005) evokes unexpected emotion
and leaves the viewer with lingering images. Colin Connors' Vestiges
(2000) explores the ability of the human spirit to triumph over isolation and
reestablish connections, and Stoner Winslett's Ancient Airs and Dances
(1986) focuses on the human traits that have connected us through the
ages.
The April 2010 performance at
The Joyce Theater marks Richmond Ballet's fourth appearance in New York City
since its debut at The Joyce in 2005. In 2007, the company again performed at
The Joyce in a retrospective of choreographer John Butler's work, sharing the
stage with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet NY, and renowned guest
artist Desmond Richardson. In 2008, the company performed an evening of
choreographer Jessica Lang's works at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing
Arts.
Encore New York: Joyce Theater Preview is generously sponsored by Hunton & Williams, Dominion Resources, KPMG
LLP, and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Sponsorship of the entire Richmond Ballet
2009-10 Studio Series is provided by Altria Group, Inc.
