Richmond Ballet’s 15th Annual Kentucky Derby Day Party
Finishes Strong
Like
the triumphant thoroughbred Big Brown, Richmond Ballet won the day on Saturday,
May 3, with its 15th Annual Kentucky Derby Day Party. During this favorite derby day tradition in Richmond, guests donned
big hats and sipped mint juleps while joining each other in a spirited viewing
of the main event on the big screen. As
Big Brown blew past the competition, the Virginia breeze gently blew through
and sweetened the scenic view of the James River that only the Village at
Rockett’s Landing could offer.
Honorary
Kentucky Derby Day party co-chairs Hugh Gouldthorpe, Senior Vice President of
Quality and Communications with Owens and Minor, and Gail Johnson of Rainbow
Station, opened the gates to all the fun with an enthusiastic welcome. The festivities included a gourmet dinner
prepared by Chef David Napier of David’s White House Catering and soulful tunes
provided by Groove Spot. Richmond Ballet
company members took partygoers for a spin on the dance floor and kept them
dancing into the night.
The
party also gave guests an opportunity to support Richmond Ballet’s mission “to awaken and uplift the human
spirit, both for audiences and dancers.” Proceeds from the ticket sales, silent auction
and raffle (with a $1,700 necklace from Sycamore Jewelers as its first prize)
benefit the Ballet’s performance, education and outreach initiatives.
The fabulous success of this year’s
Kentucky Derby Day Party further established the event as our city’s premiere
derby day tradition.
